Transalpine dispersal: Italian barred grass snakes in southernmost Bavaria—This far but no further!

چکیده

Based on 1031 samples of grass snakes from Central Europe, we examine the recently reported occurrence southern subspecies barred snake (Natrix helvetica sicula) in Bavaria, Germany. Using 13 microsatellite loci and mtDNA coding for cytb gene partial ND4 plus adjacent tRNAs, show that N. h. sicula is restricted to a few river valleys (Inn, Isar, Loisach) southernmost Bavaria Tyrol, Austria. At widening into pre-Alpine plains, hybridizes locally with common natrix) bimodal hybrid zone. Our study provides evidence Europe was colonized by Natrix over two distinct immigration routes. In addition previously known western route nominotypical subspecies, leading colonization Rhine region, crossed Alps, most likely using Brenner Pass and/or Reschen Pass. underlines Alps are not an impermeable biogeographic barrier, as often assumed. North combination geographic setting (occurrence sheltered Alpine valleys) population-density-dependent blocking immigrants resident species (N. natrix), acting concert intrinsic genetic factors, prevented formation geographically more extended Unlike helvetica, natrix hybridize north broadly, accordance their better compatibility. Many populations European have been “genetically swamped” vulgaris immigrating Balkans. This led complete replacement n. some regions, where today only persists.

Sea snakes rarely venture far from home

The extent to which populations are connected by dispersal influences all aspects of their biology and informs the spatial scale of optimal conservation strategies. Obtaining direct estimates of dispersal is challenging, particularly in marine systems, with studies typically relying on indirect approaches to evaluate connectivity. To overcome this challenge, we combine information from an eight...

Further good news on stroke, but no time for rest.

P rogressive reduction in stroke deaths over the last few decades has resulted in the recent preliminary announcement that stroke has declined from the third to the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States. 1 Moreover, the 2010 American Heart Association goal of reducing coronary heart disease and stroke mortality by 25% in the first decade of this century was achieved early, with a 3...

The dangers of leaving home: dispersal and mortality in snakes

For animal populations in many parts of the world, direct (albeit often accidental) killing by humans may be a signi®cant source of mortality. Many snakes are killed by people (especially by automobiles) every year, but the determinants of a snake's vulnerability to anthropogenic mortality (and thus, patterns of mortality with respect to sex, age and season) are poorly known. We present data on...

This Far, No Further: Introducing Virtual Borders to Mobile Robots Using a Laser Pointer

In this paper, we address the problem of controlling the workspace of a 3-DoF mobile robot. This problem arises due to the emerging coexistence between humans and robots resulting in a shared space. In such an environment, robots should navigate in a human-acceptable way according to the users’ demands. For this purpose, we propose a method that gives a non-expert user the possibility to intuit...
